A groundbreaking, explosive account of the Kennedy assassination that will rewrite the history of the 20th century's most controversial murder investigationThe questions have haunted our nation for half a century: Was the President killed by a single gunman? Was Lee Harvey Oswald part of a conspiracy? Did the Warren Commission discover the whole truth of what happened on November 22, 1963?Philip Shenon, a veteran investigative journalist who spent most of his career at The New York Times, finally provides many of the answers. Though A Cruel and Shocking Act began as Shenon's attempt to write the first insider's history of the Warren Commission, it quickly became something much larger and more important when he discovered startling information that was withheld from the Warren Commission by the CIA, FBI and others in power in Washington. Shenon shows how the commission's ten-month investigation was doomed to fail because the man leading it – Chief Justice Earl Warren – was more committed to protecting the Kennedy family than getting to the full truth about what happened on that tragic day. A taut, page-turning narrative, Shenon's book features some of the most compelling figures of the twentieth century—Bobby Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, J. Edgar Hoover, Chief Justice Warren, CIA spymasters Allen Dulles and Richard Helms, as well as the CIA's treacherous "molehunter," James Jesus Angleton.Based on hundreds of interviews and unprecedented access to the surviving commission staffers and many other key players, Philip Shenon's authoritative, scrupulously researched book will forever change the way we think about the Kennedy assassination and about the deeply flawed investigation that followed. I read this book some time ago, but recommended it to my daughter in a conversation last night. It reminded me why I liked the book. Over the years, conspiracy theorists have aggregated various facts and concluded that there had to be a conspiracy behind the assassination. The author provided a number of credible alternative theories, all of which were based on a single highly credible premise: the politicians were all looking ahead to future election campaigns and trying to suppress information that could damage their candidacy or their party's potential for success. For example, it was clear that Robert Kennedy did not want the Kennedy Administration's cooperation with the mob to assassinate Castro to come to light. The author provided an alternative explanation for the CIA's lack of cooperation: Richard Helms, in the midst of the Cold War, did not want the Russians and the Cubans to learn about how deeply he had infiltrated and bugged the Cuban embassy in Mexico City, the source of much of the intelligence about Oswald. To me, the biggest single argument against a theory that Oswald was recruited by the Russians, the Cubans, Lyndon Johnson or the Mafia to kill JFK is one which the author implicitly, but powerfully, makes: no organized and well-conceived assassination attempt driven by a government or an organized crime operation would choose someone as erratic and unstable as Oswald to execute an assassination. On the other hand, the author powerfully makes arguments as to why a wide range of stakeholders would have wanted to cover up facts that would have emerged from a thorough investigation. The recent Ken Burns documentary on the Vietnam War exposed the degree to which politicians in the 1960's made big decisions that had tragic consequences for the country because of very narrow and partisan political calculations. I believe that the behaviors during the Warren Commission investigation fit neatly into this pattern. In effect, there was a cover-up, without politicians knowing exactly what they were covering up about the assassination. They knew exactly what they were covering up relative to the investigation. The public's suspicion of a conspiracy was well-placed, but the conspiracy was focused on cover-up, not the commission of the original crime.
