The book features beautiful art and exciting-sounding techniques, but suffers from poor editing and misleading instructions.GRAMMAR: Every time I'd start to get excited about the book I'd hit another 'grammar road bump' that would distract me. I want to read, not play editor! For example, in "The Basics: Mixing a Glaze" Step 6 tells us to "Maker Some Areas Darker." In Chapter 4 we're told to "Learn to observe carefully at walls . . . " instead of the cleaner "Learn to carefully observe walls . . ." In "Paint a Surface to Draw On" you'll find my least favorite show stopper, this astounding double negative: "There is not one pencil or pastel that will not love this texture."INSTRUCTIONS: I read the entire book then went back to the beginning and tried the exercise on mixing a basic glaze. The instructions state we should use a 1:10 ratio of fluid acrylic to glazing medium. I did exactly that -- ten drops of paint, and one drop of fluid acrylic mixed together. The color was much darker than I thought a glaze should be, and when I re-read the section I discovered the authors wanted me to dip my brush into the one drop of fluid acrylic, and mix that tiny bit of paint into with the glaze. So the true ratio is more like 1:50. Why even include the ratio if you aren't going to use it? The glaze was disappointing, too -- brush marks everywhere despite using a soft synthetic brush. I feel like information is missing.BOTTOM LINE: I doubt I'll complete any additional exercises in this book. It's painful to read, and since the very first technique failed I'm reluctant to spend more of my energy/time/supplies on this book.
